Professional Work
Apptronik
Apptronik designs versatile humanoid robots to work alongside humans in industries like logistics and manufacturing. Their mission is to empower people through human-robot collaboration.
At Apptronik I work as a mechanical engineer in the actuation department, but in addition to actuators, I have also worked on robotic structures, test fixtures, and production.
Actuators
I designed several actuators for Apptronik robots, including linear (ballscrew) actuators, and rotary actuators with strain wave gearing. I saw each of these actuator through the end of their design cycle, including short production runs, testing, debugging, and use in the greater system. I was even an inventor on a patent for linear actuators. (Currently pending)
THE ARM
I did all the mechanical design for Apollos Arm, pictured left! Fitting everything necessary for the function of this arm into the smallest package possible was a real engineering challenge! The arm also had to be serviceable, robust to falls, manufacturable, and designed in a tight timeline.
At Apptronik, I gained experience with:
Design for manufacture and assembly
GD&T
CAD and FEA
Mechatronic systems
Testbed Design
Bearing design
Structural optimization
Robotic Design
Working closely with interdisciplinary teams
Service and Build
At Apptronik, I had the opportunity to not only design, but also to get hands on with the robots I designed. I closed the design loop by building and servicing the actuators and structures I designed. I even helped to create and oversee short run production lines for my actuators.
