Electric Rollerblades

What

These are my electric rollerblades, which I finished summer 2021. They are designed to create a fast and easy way for me to get around campus while maintaining some creativity. I have seen quite a few electric vehicles on campus, including some DIY ones, but I have never seen electric rollerblades. Most DIY electric vehicles tend to be electric skateboards. I don't know how to skateboard, but I do know how to rollerblade, so this seemed like the natural choice!

Here are some of the machined components for this project. On the left is the chainwheel and on the right are one side of the frames. The frame machining was quite complex and took >30 hrs.

How

This project used a lot of mechanical engineering and manufacturing skills. First, I picked out the parts, a pair of low kV brushless electric motors, 24V LiPo batteries, and a pair of skateboard ESCs. I decided to use a chain to increase the torque of the motors. For this, I had to design and manufacture a custom chainwheel that mounted on rollerblade wheels. I also had to design and manufacture custom frames. I machined all these parts on a 7 ton Okuma CNC mill, which took approximately 35 hours total. I also designed and manufactured sheet metal adapters between a boot and the frame.
